Understand the risk

Rabies is an infection transmitted through the saliva of infected mammals. Bites, scratches, and saliva reaching broken skin or the eyes or mouth can require assessment.

Make prevention part of your plans

Avoid touching or feeding unfamiliar animals. Discuss pre-exposure vaccination with a healthcare professional before travel or an extended stay.

After possible exposure

Wash the affected area with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seek prompt medical attention. Do not wait for symptoms.
